Do we KNOW it has to be paid in full? I don't get why it would be a League rule that it'd have to be paid up front. A release clause is Celta's contract, they could accept payment in bananas if they wanted. I think someone has got confused with the fact that the player has to lodge his fee with the League. I've not seen this anywhere official, just one of the Facebook people running with it because it suits his criticism of the Club.

Why the fuck would they bother if they knew their method of payment couldn't be accepted? I don't care what anyone thinks of them - they're just not going to waste their time. Sounds like guesswork bullshit to me.

the kid had a two week holiday inbetween an international tournament and pre-season, and unlike all of his mates larging it up in a dubai penthouse, he went camping in the woods for his dad's birthday, despite it being the middle of their winter.

attempting to sway that sort of character with a bung was never going to work out.

Re: Maxi Gomez
It's very obvious from the start that the player favoured a move to Valencia but I get the feeling his agent and Celta were using us a bit to get a better deal for them both whilst always knowing he was going to stay in Spain.

Can't say I knew too much about the player unlike some "experts" on here but thats social media for you. As soon as we are linked with a player they go on YouTube for a few clips and then become fixated with them.

Onwards and Upwards

With 2 comparable cash and wages offers...but one with Euro/CL games...
Most players would seek Euro Action...
Obviously we don't have it this season...
Mainly thanks to a Shite Arnautovic...

You have to assume we have plan B and C being worked on. No need to panic. Husillos and Pell have done alright so far, let's see what happens.

At the end of the day, we should have at least two more strikers more than we presently have.

The board should have other options lined up.

"Players go for money now, simple."

I agree, but it comes across as if he doesn't even want to come for money. He'd merely be fulfilling a contractual obligation - which is something most probably sorted out between agent and club.

Players go for money now, simple. Loyalty in football has gone, so im not really too bothered who signs. If we get a good couple of seasons then so be it..

penners28,

You're right.

But, as i said earlier, do you want a player who doesn't want to be here?

Ideally, you want a player who really wants to join for footballing reasons.

Next best, is someone who only joins for the money.

In Gomez case, it seems to me, its neither.

He'd only be signing because we've activated his release clause.

Obviously, i don't know the truth (as none of us do) but it just doesn't seem right us just activating his release cause and signing him.

Im disappointed, as i would have liked us to sign him. But he has to want to come to us for one reason or another, surely?

penners28 9:23 Thu Jul 11
Re: Maxi Gomez
for the release clause to be activated the money had to be paid in one go.

If we had offered that it would have been accepted, and i reckon he’d be ours now...

Re: Maxi Gomez
CR not many clubs do or even can pay sums of £44m up front these days.
Trying to pay in instalments is standard practice.
As to what we could offer that Valencia couldn’t? Rightly or wrongly it’s simple: allot more money.
Easy for us to say he was never interested in coming but the club must have had some indication that he might be tempted otherwise they wouldn’t have sent a delegation out there to even try - besides, easy for Gomez to go to Valencia and say that he was always going to sign for them because A that’s what the fans want to hear and B it’s not like anyone can prove him wrong?

CR 8:16 Thu Jul 11
Re: Maxi Gomez
I’m sorry but I think it is. We were apparently offering a lot of money but instalments when all the indications are they wanted it all upfront. When have our owners ever been willing to offer money all upfront. The other club that wanted him were apparently offering players as well as money why did we think they would be interested in instalments. Also by all accounts there is no reason to believe he was interested in coming to us. What exactly were they going to offer him to make him want to come to us. If you are going to say they had to try, fair enough try and move on. We don’t seem to move on and end up with the kind of players I mentioned before, that cost money in wages without adding value to the team.

Considering we were offering loads more money than Valencia, that's not what's happened here, CR.

Re: Maxi Gomez
They seem to play this game most transfer windows. They go for a player who has his sights set elsewhere, usually a club in champions league, whose club are making monetary demands for him that our skinflints are not likely to meet. Then we go into this fog of confusion where in the end we do not really know whether it’s the player not wanting to come or the owners not meeting conditions. This game gets played ad nauseam throughtout window until we are left with next to no time to get another player. Then we have some injury prone player on a free or some old has been looking for a final pay day.

brundal 4:19 Thu Jul 11
Re: Maxi Gomez
Sullivan sent a agent to negotiate the payment, who was recommended by his son Jack, this agent has never worked for the club , hardly a way to secure the transfer of which could have been our biggest signing ,.

As much as our owners have fucked things up in the past, I can't see that they have done much wrong here - with regards to the Gomez deal.

It seems that Celta Vigo prefer the Valencia player plus cash deal and Gomez wants to stay in Spain and play Champions League football - we can't be paying €50 million release clauses, for a bloke that allegedly, doesn't really want to join us.

Would be great if Gomez comes back, still high from all that South American wacky backy he's smoked, then decides to join us instead - can't see it happening, though.

Maybe if we'd paid the release clause all up front but we were never going to do that. That just isn't the way DS operates.
